This is the best time of the year to visit the largest island in Greece, Chania which is located in the western part of the country. Upon arrival, you will see that the island has changed very little since seven decades ago when the book Zorba the Greek was published by Nikos Kazantzakis, a local author. Chania used to be the capital of Crete and the island still holds a lot of history influenced by various cultures such as Greek, Ottoman, Venetian and Minoan. The major change you will notice is that there are many options now when it comes to accommodations, food and drinks as well as rental car companies such as Flisvos.

The airport in Chania is located 10 miles from the north eastern part of the center of the city. Taking the public bus will cost you about €2.50. If you take a taxi, which is faster, the standard fare going to the center of the city is about €20. If you rented a car from car companies such as Flisvos then you will be able to travel from the airport to your hotel without hassle.

Keep in mind that Chania is located in the most western part of Crete. It is about 100 miles to the west from Heraklion which is the capital of the island. Peninsulas are guarding the island on both sides – on the west is Rodhopou while on the east is Akrotiri. Kastelli is the inner core and this is where you’ll find the Minoan ruins. If you want to check out what used to be the Turkish quarter then you will have to go east and visit Splanzia.

If you want to see a view, you can check out harbor where the lighthouse built more than four centuries is located and the sea wall offers wonderful views. Across the body of water, you will see the Mosque of the Janissaries. You can then take a hike from the lighthouse.

There are a lot you can do once you have your rented car from Flisvos. You will be able to experience the delicious food offered on the island and you will be able to go window shopping on Chania’s market.
